Little Known Dangerous Secret About… Pants

good.

The number one mistake most tall guys most all guys make when buying pants, is in the length department. No, not too short–most guys wisely leave the old “Tom Sawyer” look to pop stars and Jethro. That’s not the problem…

The problem is: most guys, (myself included, for a long time), wear their pants just a bit too long.

Now, I’ve had some old friends say to me, “Look Jim: every man has the right to wear his trousers the length that he sees fit. If I think a little “bagginess” around my ankles looks ok–that’s my choice.”

And they’re absolutely right.

But.

There’s a difference between looking ok–and looking GREAT. And I have a feeling if you only wanted to look ok, you wouldn’t be reading this.

Now. Nobody needs to run right out after this article and have every pair of pants in their closet altered. Just put this little trick under your belt for when you buy your next pair:

For the next few days, I want you to start noticing how long people wear their slacks as it relates to their professional position. If you work in a corporate environment this will be easier to notice…

(…have to warn you, this is gonna sound a little strange, and perhaps a little unfair, but it’s a dangerous little secret you can USE to your advantage!):

HERE IT IS…

If you observe closely over the next few days, you may begin to notice that most VP’s and ABOVE, wear their slacks like the pic at the top of this article (I invite you to scroll back up there and take a look).

The pants follow a clean line all the way down to the hem, with very little “break” or “bagginess” around the shoe area. VP’s and above.

On the other hand, most guys who wear their pants like this? …

pants too long

…MIDDLE MANAGERS OR BELOW.

It’s true!

I know. That’s an awful big brush I’m painting with, but before you call bull, I want you to take a few days and notice!

There are always exceptions, of course (and if you’re a VP with baggy ankles–pull yourself TOGETHER man!), but I think you’ll find this general trend holds true, especially if you live in a reasonably developed, metropolitan city.

Now, I’m not a high-fashion type of guy, but I do think every guy (especially if you’re tall and conspicuous like me) ought to have as smart a look as possible. Even if you “like” the long pants look, and could give two flips about corporate bull–why not give yourself an edge?

Hey, I know we’re only talking about PANTS here, but let’s face it: in this world, the richer and more powerful you look, the more people tend to cooperate with you… and you’ve just subtracted one less hassle from life.

Getting the length right on your pants might not get you a corner office tomorrow, but at least your “look” won’t be holding you back from the big time in the future.

Quite a few of you may already know this little secret… and if you’ve got any more, I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

I’ve got a feeling there are some folks I will be unable to convince, and that’s ok. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this fundamental.
